MP3:Mike Slott – 40 winx

“Mike Slott is one of the deeply inspirational next generation beat builders pushing electronic sound into a whole new stratosphere for 2010.” – Mary Anne Hobbs

Over the last few years Mike has cemented his reputation at the forefront of futurist hip hop production. With a style that is hard to pin down – encompassing a myriad of influences from free jazz to 80s boogie via golden age hip hop. His previous work alongside Hudson Mohawke as Heralds of Change set the benchmark for the new-school of dynamic beatmakers. Since then he has released 2 solo 7”s on All City, a split 7” with Dabrye, appeared on Beat Dimensions 2, Mary Anne Hobbs ‘Wild Angels’ compilation and provided high profile remixes for Warp and Citinite.

“If Mike’s music wasn’t this good, I would be looking at his hair all day” – Martyn 3024

“Luv’ Mike’s music long time… Amanallah and Six AM are particularly fizzy” – Kode 9

Originally from Dublin, via Glasgow, now based in Harlem NYC Mike has many places to draw upon. The son of the late-Jazz legend Mike Nolan and brother to the modern classical composer Luke Slott, Mike effortlessly embodies his influences on this release.

“It’s got a lush and beautiful thing that’s hard to find in electronic music. There’s always a feeling of hope in Mike’s sound” – Flying Lotus

The last 12 months have seen Mike tour extensively throughout the US and Europe including high profile appearances at SONAR 09, BRAINFEEDER & CMJ. With this release we see stylistically unique avant-garde hip hop from an artist sure to move up into even bigger territory.

“Like a soundtrack to a sci-fi dream sequence. glittering lights, docking sequences, warm hearts and smiles, the ground disappearing below. Mike’s music glides and sparkles.” – Jamie Vex’d

7×7 BEAT: A Definitive Series From All City Records

Boomkat

All City Records have become a force to be reckoned with, counting Mike Slott, Hud Mo, Onra and Fulgeance among their roll call of on-it producers. Their recently completed 7×7 series was a joy to uncover, with each installment unwrapped and digested with much glee around these parts. This digital version collects the entire series into one absolutely killer listen for any self respecting hiphop nuts. The highlights are many, including Mike Slott’s psyched head nodder ‘Knock Knock’ and electrosoul nugget ‘My Lightbridge’, next to Fulgeance’s party joint ‘Revenge Of The Nerds’ and two wildly abstract and synth driven sound designs from Rush Hour’s Mweslee. It’s left to Hudson Mohawke, however, to steal the show with ‘Star Crackout’, a completely unexpected but entirely welcome Paavoharju style melodic delicacy sitting next to ‘Root Hands’, a stupendous slice of slow house abstraction that’s almost worth the entry fee alone. Finally two shining lights of the nu-skool instrumental hip hop scene provide some of their finest recent material with Onra’s buttered electrosoul bomb ‘My Comet’ and Dimlite’s brand new ‘Quiz Tears’ tacked on the end to leave a very odd taste in your ears that’ll guarantee you come back for more. Any heads feeling Flying Lotus, Rustie or Dorian Concept should jump on this without fail.

Boomkat

Drawing for more premier cuts from the increasingly blurred parameters of hiphop, future funk and electronica, the impeccably curated Producer series from Fat City offers up two wicked nuggets from Dabrye and Mike Slott. This one takes cues from swinging electro soul and post-Dilla slump-funk, with Mike Slott’s ‘Home’ shuffling in on some smartly broken drums somehow connecting the rattling 2-step syncopations with a slow-mo electro-soul swing and a droning haze of electro synthlines. Dabrye’s ‘Walk’ cut on the flip makes the electro influence even more overt with a slow and sticky rhythm built from a palette of modified 808′s and eerie vocal samples pitched way down and psychedelically mixed with bleeping electronica motifs for a very special joint. It’s probably the best Dabrye track we’ve heard since his mix of King Midas Sound’s ‘Cool Out’ and therefore rather essential. Killer!
