Anadolu Pop/Moğollar – Haliçate Günesin Batisi

Moğollar (meaning Mongols in Turkish) is one of the pioneer bands in Turkish rock music for about 40 years and one of the founders of Turkish ethno rock music (or Anatolian rock music). The major goal of the band is to prove that folk music has a multi-layered soul and folk music’s dynamism is very close to pop music’s dynamism.

Anadolu Pop is a musical style created by Murat Ses of Mogollar in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The style is a synthesis of Western and Turkish musical styles and elements and is possibly the first fusion from this geographic region. A unique album with predominantly Murat Ses compositions and arrangements (Danses et Rythmes de la Turquie d’hier à aujourd’hui) with this style and was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque of the Charles Cros Academy in Paris (1971).

Welsh Rare Beat 2!

After the musical feast that was Welsh Rare Beat comes a second helping of Welsh-language esoterica courtesy of Andy Votel, Dom Thomas and Gruff Rhys. The Welsh Rare Beat 2 menu invites us to tuck into a scrumptious selection of kitsch, cosmic and psychedelic flavours by the likes of Heather Jones, Meic Stevens and Y Tebot Piws (The Purple Teapot) – to name but three.

Sleeve notes are penned by Gruff Rhys whose scribblings on the first instalment were a genuine education in Welsh-language rock and pop history.

The packaging here is fun too undermining stereotypes and tapping into some of the more colourful events of recent Welsh popular culture like the Dyfed Triangle and Welsh motorcycle gangs (ground already covered extensively on this blog, I might add). Check out the press release – it’s very entertaining and a nice piece of Welsh popular culture in itself.

Welsh Rare Beat 2 is released by Finders Keepers records and is on sale now.

Ananda Shankar – Ananda Shankar And His Music (1975)

One of the greatest albums ever by one of the most compelling figures in Indian music! Ananda Shankar’s been chronicled elsewhere and often on these pages — so by this point, you probably already know that he’s a renegade pioneer who combined funky grooves with sitars and tablas, forging a whole new sound in Indian music that’s still having quite a bit of influence today. This 1975 album is a stunner — way more open-minded than his other album for Reprise (which we’ve also got on reissue!), with tracks that push the funky groove a lot farther than you’d expect, swirling percussion, organ, guitar, tablas, moog, and sitar all together into an unbelievable sound that will leave you breathless! Titles include “Dancing Drums”, “Streets Of Calcutta”, “Back Home”, “Renunciation”, “Dawn”, and “The Lonely Rider”.
