First thing’s first – we really need to get it off our chests – Dabrye’s version of ‘One Ting’ is not only for our money the best thing he’s ever done (by some distance), it’s also one of the most beautifully addictive, surprising things we’ve heard this year and another towering achievement from the impeccable Hyperdub imprint – you just need it in your life!!!! Ok, now that weve got that out the way, back to the beginning. South London dub warrior Kevin Martin returns for his second outing on Hyperdub alongside Roger Robinson, reunited after their dope collab on The Bug’s ‘Pressure’ LP. The keen eared among you will recognise ‘Cool Out’ from Kode 9′s Sonar mix from last year, a sweet and sour lovers rock anthem for the 21st Century featuring Robinson’s lonesome distant vocals and active subbass for soundsystem pressure.
This EP gets hotter when you reach the second cut, that Dabrye cut we mentioned earlier, his version of ‘One Ting’ from the forthcoming KMS album turns it into a slack and squelchy downbeater with icy filtered string stabs sounding like some kind of utterly genius Portishead offcut, it’s just stunning, check the samples! Flylo finishes off with a mix of ‘Lost’ constructing a reeling riddim with a wandering bleep line and dense thickets of digitally applied crackle for a head sweltering version that you’d expect from the man. This is probably the most anticipated Hyperdub release since the Burial album so we don’t need to say no more. (Boomkat)
