Rush Hour

Jason Jagel’s debut book – 73 Funshine (feat. Madlib’s Yesterdays Universe 10”). Below are details on this project, but in case you aren’t familiar with Jason’s work, he has contributed art for a number of Madlib’s jazz related projects as well as MF Doom’s ‘MM…Food’ album cover.

This large-format, full-color monograph by contemporary artist *Jason Jägel* features over 200 images from Jägel’s career, largely focusing on his current practice. His sometimes-loose, sometimes-tight narrative gouache paintings populate this oversize publication. Music references, family life, and the humming buzz of the street are often found in a single, sprawling image. His work includes fictional and actual album cover paintings, records made of paper, narrative vinyl “grooves” made of pencil and paintings inspired by specific songs, albums and artists.
Jägel’s connection to music has been strengthened by the use of his paintings as record cover designs for the LA-based hip-hop label *Stones Throw*, among others. Stones Throw’s major artist, *Madlib*, has three exclusive tracks that appear on a companion 10-inch vinyl record with its own full-color sleeve designed by Jägel. Contributors include Madlib, Jeff Jank, Nate Denver.
