In a time when hip-hop collaborations can get a bit stale, it’s hard to find a group as freshly innovative as The Gent$, which consists of Pugs Atomz, Wes Restless, Ill Legit and DJ ALO.
Pugs and Ill Legit handle most of the lyrics, which allows Wes Restless to open up as a formidable vocalist; this gives the group a multitude of styles to build from. The trio has worked alongside producers The Opus and Maker (as well as getting contributions from Ill Legit, Limitless, V Traxx and Dario) to create a sound that is on point with what Pugs describes as “the struggle to become something better; a gentleman.” It isn’t a shock to know that the group’s debut amassed 10,000 downloads, and the near future looks even brighter as The Gent$ are featured guests on DJ Vadim’s newest album, U Can’t Lurn Imaginashun, released by BBE Records.

UK crate digging label Finders Keepers asked the always-amazing Gaslamp Killer to work their first 20 releases into a mix. He layered, mixed, collaged, and edited the catalog for the debut Finders Keepers mix CD. Now the label has released this limited edition 7″ featuring edits from that session. It has a megamix on the a-side, and a total psychedelic headbanger on the b-side. If you don’t know The GLK, you should, he runs in the same turntablist circles as Flying Lotus, Samiyam, Nosaj Thing, etc, but he has a much stronger psychedelic vibe. Limited to 500, this is impressive stuff.

Hailing from the California desert, Alf Alpha has cultivated his music production from the Coachella Valley’s unique art and music culture where he was born and raised. It was there that Alf Alpha developed a love for punk rock as a child, eventually pawning his drum set for a pair of turntables after appropriating hip-hop into his already broad taste in music. It is also in the desert that Alf Alpha still garners a large cult following hungry for the DJ’s latest work.
